Nutrient pollution slips under regulatory radar.

چکیده
Toronto has declared that every new building on its campuses will be designed to be “green-roofready”, according to Bass. “If the roof can support it and the budget is there, there are more benefits with an intensive roof. You get social benefits, and you may get even a stronger energy benefit too,” he adds. Peck agrees. Emphasizing the need to integrate green roofs into design, he says, “The roofs of our cities are the last great opportunity we have to generate a positive impact from that space.” —BARBARA BOOTH Bass says. As a result, green-roof advocates successfully lobbied the City of Toronto for a bylaw that mandates that every city-owned building will get a green roof unless physical reasons preclude it. “When you look at the big-picture impact of green roofs, when you find out that they can reduce the urban heat island by 1–2 °C, and you further find out that a 1 °C reduction in the temperature of the city in Toronto reduces peak [electrical] demand by 5%— we’re starting to talk about hundreds of millions of dollars,” Peck points out.

Perspectives on Nutrient Pollution in the Last Half of the 20th Century
There is currently much debate about sources of pollution, particularly nutrient pollution of surface and groundwaters. It frequently appears that everyone is quite confident everyone else is contributing far more than they are. The reality, particularly for nutrient pollution, is that we all are part of the problem and must be part of the solution. This paper offers a science-based perspective...
متن کاملEffect of nutrient supply on photosynthesis and pigmentation to short-term stress (UV radiation) in Gracilaria conferta (Rhodophyta).
The effects of increased photosynthetic active radiation (PAR), UV radiation (UVR), and nutrient supply on photosynthetic activity, pigment content, C:N ratio and biomass yield were studied in tank cultivated Gracilaria conferta (Rhodophyta). Electron transport rate (ETR) and biliprotein content were higher under high nutrient supply (HNS), obtained from fishpond effluents, compared to low nutr...
متن کاملFeature Extraction And Classification Of Oil Spills In Sar Imagery
Synthetic Aperture RADAR (SAR) imaging system is used to monitor the marine system. Oil spill pollution plays a significant role in damaging marine ecosystem. One main advantages of SAR is that it can generate imagery under all weather conditions. In a SAR image dark spots can be generated by number of phenomena. The dark spots may be of algae, low wind areas, coastal areas and oil spills. The ...

High-frequency (HF) radar technology produces detailed velocity maps near the surface of estuaries and bays. The use of velocity data in environmental prediction, nonetheless, remains unexplored. In this paper, we uncover a striking flow structure in coastal radar observations of Monterey Bay, along the California coastline.
